Training Update: Base Building Week Two

Now that I'm back in a building phase I thought I'd return to posting regular training updates. I'm in my second week of base-building with a plan to continue to cycle through my current schedule for the next two weeks, before changing up the Wednesday workout once I hit December.

It's funny to be typing away about running when this morning I woke up with a sore throat and skipped my hilly 7 miler all together. But at this stage, there's no point in running through tiredness or sickness just to get the miles in, so I chose rest even though I probably could have pushed through (and have in the past).

Last week had a decent amount of elevation gain, thanks to one hilly run I did with Jessica Goldman on Friday. It was nice to get the long run out of the way on Friday, it made for a pretty relaxing weekend.

Here's how the week broke down:

Monday: REST (post half marathon, my body was definitely pushed the the limits of its durability since I hadn't really prepared for the race with any long runs). I did do 15 minutes of mobility.

Tuesday

Hilly run. (7.25 mi; 1:07:00; 9:13/mi; 850 ft in gain)

Run: 3K time trial on the track. It was cold and I was alone and these early AM track sessions are fasted, so it makes things a little tough. But I felt like I ran smart: went easy on the first 3 laps and then tried to ramp up the pace with each of the 4 remaining laps). 3K in 12:48. Daily total: 4.79mi; 45:21)

Run: Hilly long run. This run had it all: dirt road, mountain views, fast downhills, blustery wind gusts, several pit-stops in the woods and good company! 15.0; 2:22:56; 9:30/mi; 1850ft. There was a lot of hills!

Saturday

Run: Easy 4 around home + 30 min strength. Got catcalled with less than a mile to go in this run and it made my blood boil. It was so infuriating. Why do people do that? (4.06; 34:18; 8:26/mi; 69 ft gain).

Run: I slept in and headed out later in the morning and my middle guy, Jack protested my run, so I invited him to come with me to which he responded with an excited "yes!" It was so nice to have company, even though it was a short run it was so gray outside I just wanted it to be over, but we chatted and he asked questions and it was a great way to cap off the week. (4,02; 40:35; 10:05/mi; 256ft gain)

Week Totals: 40.96 miles and 3369 ft in elevation gain

I'm already anticipating that this week will be a lower mileage week due to today's skipped run. If I can fall somewhere around the 35-36 mark by the end of the week, I'll be pleased. I'll be Turkey Trotting on Thanksgiving for the first time EVER! Which should be fun! I can't wait.

Are you running a Turkey Trot? What does your training look like right now?
