From a Mountain to the Sea: My Nuun Hood to Coast Application

Even though I share a lot of my life on this blog, I am an introvert by nature. I've always been more of a wallflower: silently watching. Thinking, but not talking. I like to write. I feel safe behind words. But the Nuun Hood to Coast application is not an essay...it's a video (although my video really is an essay in disguise--that darn English teacher in me). When I watch myself on video the introvert in me cringes a little because I feel like a complete dork, but the runner in me gets so excited because I really want to be part of this journey from a mountain to the sea. Hood to Coast is the largest relay in the world and this year, as in years past, Nuun is sponsoring an all women's team to run the relay. I want to be on that team. And here is why...

About halfway through the making of the video you just watched I had major "writers block." I couldn't see how I was going to finish what I had started. I let it sit for a few days, frustrated that I just couldn't seem to convey what I saw in my head. So on Wednesday of this week, in the middle of cleaning the house, I thought I just need to get it all out. Whenever my students were frustrated with their inability to write, I would encourage them to put pen to paper without limitation or rules, letting go of the pressure to make it perfect. Often times this little exercise is enough to dislodge the hangup that is keeping the writer from conveying what they really want to say. I thought doing the same with a video might be helpful and this is what happened:

Talk about dork...but it worked! It dislodged all the things I really wanted to say and enable me to finish the project I started and gave my husband a good laugh in the process. And in case you were wondering what's up with the fingers? I think that's what happens when you play with the "Old McDonald" glove puppet every day. Jack loves that thing.

Have your been a part of a relay team before? What was the best part of the experience?
