Grateful and a Race for Recovery

We spent this past weekend up in Maine at my mother-in-law's beach house. It has become a special place for us filled with summer memories, but we really love it in the off-season, when all the tourist are gone and we have the beach to ourselves. One of favorite thing to do there is sit out on the sun porch, look out over the ocean and read or write as I listen to the surf. It's pretty darn relaxing, especially when you add a glass of wine to that scenario.

As we drove down the shore road towards the house, you could see some of the remnants of Hurricane Sandy: sand and seaweed strewn across the road. The Maine coast faired well, and the house (which sits on the most prominent point of the beach meaning it bears the brunt of every storm) came through unscathed. I felt so grateful, people in New York and New Jersey were not so lucky. I couldn't help but think of the arial photos I've seen of the beaches of New Jersey and Staten Island where rows of houses along the beach were washed away. The people that own those homes probably love them for the same reasons that our family loves going to our beach house: to relax, to connect with each other, to enjoy the beauty of the ocean. I can't imagine having all that washed away in a moment.

Some of my bloggy-friends were directly affected by the storm one of which is organizing a virtual race as a fund raiser. Michele of NYCRunningMama has put together the Race for Recovery 5K/10K as a way for her readers to help residents of Staten Island who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Please consider joining me on December 8th as I run (hopefully!) or walk the race. All entry fees will go directly to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and Michele has lined up some amazing prizes to give away! You can visit her blog HERE to sign up!

If you've wanted to help but weren't sure how, this is a perfect way. If you can't run and still want to donate you can do so directly through the Tunnel to Towers FoundationHERE.
